“I'm very curious, I guess, as a human being.” —Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Director)

Three weeks ago, if I walked 12 miles in a day, I would have felt a great sense of accomplishment and pride. Today, we walked 12 miles, and I felt like I cheated my Camino day. Only 12 miles? Really?

It is amazing how the body begins to be “conditioned” to walk long distances after two weeks. 12 miles day are “light” days. I’m really thankful that I feel like I’m hitting my stride.

I got to walk all 12 miles with my Camino Family, which I have nicknamed “Platoon Five.” Our short journey today also included a wonderful breakfast stop. We ventured into a small town (population 11) and found a rural hotel and restaurant.

Originally, one of the proprietors banished us to the outdoor patio (it was 42 degrees) that reeked of cow manurer. Five minutes later, a woman, we think the proprietor’s spouse, rescued us from the cold and redirected us into the house. We sat in a charming, small dining room filled with only locals. We had a delicious breakfast.

Tomorrow, the weather forecast has us nervous. It calls for temperatures in the low-to-mid 30s with a chance of snow. 12 miles or even 2 miles in the snow—that will be a real accomplishment!

Lesson of the Day: Small towns on the Camino can offer big rewards to the pilgrims who search.
